The health grew better among people, they lived longer. The children flocks continued to be large. There where too many people in the land. Than, roomers of "the beloved land" came across. Between 1825 and 1930, more than 800,000 Norwegians left for America. In 1929 immigration restrictions became effective. Norway's annual quota was 2,377.

In my childhood, sometimes letters with strange stamps where dropped in the letter box at the little house by the road used for milk pails. These letters, "Amerikabrev", where for my grandpa, letters from his sister in America. Just married she went for "the beloved land" in 1913, to North Dakota. She newer saw her childhood home again. But sometimes the letter was for my grandma, whos brother also left for America and settled down in Canada.

There where many of those who left Eksingedalen for America. Some of them to go to an uncle, a brother or a sisters who went years before. Some came home after a while, some to find a wife and go back. One of those who left from the farm Trefall no one heard anything from anymore.

When I started out in spring 2004 with the Trefall pages, one of the subjects I had in mind was the emigration history. And then, all of a sudden, in fall 2005, there was a new guestbook entry, from a unknown second cousin, from Gary and Karen Windheim, Oregon, USA. The magic of the Internet! These emigration pages start growing.

These pages are about those who left for the unknown, why, where to, and about the new life "over there".
